MTB Report – 4th June 2019

Compendium Burg Wheelers MTB Race 14th July.

Helpers needed to marshal and assist at the water tables. Please forward names to myself or Clive Deacon via WhatsApp.

Sharon has already filled her quota for registration, so thanks to those who responded so promptly.

A/B Group – A/B group ride this past weekend. This group is for the faster riders. Should anyone be willing to regularly lead, please contact me.

C Group – Mark Rowland leads the C group. After a recent gathering of C and D group brains trust, it has been decided to brand these two groups slightly differently. The C group is more of an intermediate ability group doing as much single track as they can, riding at a somewhat faster pace typically 16km/h. The intention is to ride about 30km in a Saturday morning.

D Group – The D group is intended for those wishing to do what the C group does but at a lesser pace and over a lesser distance. Typically around 28km’s at approx. 14km/h. The D group is led by various members on a roster format.

LIGHTS: The roadies are doing it and so should mountain bikers when riding on public roads, tar or gravel. Use LIGHTS front and back, even in the day time. We need to be as visible as possible when on the roads. It’s in our own interest to give ourselves a fighting chance against motor vehicles.

ICE: Also carry some ID so that you can be identified in the unimaginable event of being knocked over. BW have been promoting a small card that can be used for this purpose and carried with you. Mine is in my cell phone cover.

Group Reports for Sat 1st June

A/B Group –

C Group - Team Rowland have been challenged by the Booysen Bears for the upcoming Pondo Pedal. I think the term Andre used was ‘humiliate beyond recovery.’ The social consequences of this actually happening are too hideous to contemplate, so we are taking it seriously, and have been putting in some extra training. The route planning for Saturday was adjusted accordingly – a little more distance, a few more long hills, a little more speed, and an extra cappuccino afterwards. Hope for the best, but plan for the worst, that’s us.

The weather played along – crisp, but clear. We had a reasonable turnout for the day before the Karkloof Classic: the Kruppenfuhrer, Teams Booysen & Rosie / Wayne, Clive, Dylan, Andy R, Dogbite, and a slew of DD’s there to celebrate Dale’s return to the MTB saddle. Dave took Team Booysen and the Kruppenfuhrer with him, and the rest came with us.

The ride was surprisingly cold at the start, but apart from a bit of mud, and some opportunistic route exploration, I’m pleased to report that very little happened. Dylan was early, Sean didn’t fall off in the parking lot, Andy arrived with all of the required kit, no vultures circled us, and I didn’t fall into any puddles. There were no mechanicals, no medicals, no major route news, no losses or gains, almost no other riders, plenty of extremely pleasant chatter, and a great training ride. When the mood took them, Wayne and Rosie made the rest of us seem like we were looking for parking, but that’s very normal. After 35km’s of the above, we descended en masse upon Jaxx, and refreshed enthusiastically with the other groups.

By the time you read this, Dogbite and Docmike will have departed for a week’s relaxed cycling around the Matopos in Zim. Hopefully they will send us some pictures.

Garmin Stats: 35km, 2h20 moving time, 640m ascent, 15km/h ave, and 2-14 degrees.

His worthiness the Kruppenfuhrer [may his brakes never bind] has very kindly agreed to sub for me on the 15th June. Book your place now.

Mark Rowland

D Group - Liz and Andre B and I joined Dave for a nice easy ride in Cedara. Strava stats: 29km and 460m climbing in 2:10h.

Race Report - Karkloof Classic:

A frosty morning greeted a moderate (by Karkloof standards) number of riders on Sunday. This didn’t however dampen the enthusiasm and the events rolled out of the start line like clockwork. The BW gazebo was up and coffee was brewing for the early birds. Cathy had some delicious muffins out to go with the coffee. Overall a good turn-out of club members who all enjoyed post-race drinks and eats.

Some good results from members riding in the various categories, especially the youth and juniors having to ride in the 60km for the first time. So well done all. Selected results below.
