Sat morning Rides.
This Sat 15th September, we will be leaving from Woodburn Steers at 5:00. We will be riding to Comrades Wall via Fox Hill, returning on Polly’s. The ride is about 98km. It will still be dark at this time, so ensure both back and front lights are working. Burg Wheelers kit is compulsory.
Ladysmith Road Race hosted by Siegetown Wheelers.
A few of us B’s teamed up with the A’s and had a really good ride in Ladysmith on Sunday morning. We woke up on a very chilly morning, and driving through Knottingham Rd, all the way passed Mooi River, the veld was covered in snow. Fortunately, Ladysmith was clear, just very chilly at the start. There were less than 50 people that did the 100km race. A really enjoyable race with some fantastic views going up and down De Beers Pass. The roads are also in very good condition. A race that should be better supported in the future. Stats for the ride was, 98km, Climbing 1250m, 3hr 44 min. 26.5 km/hr.
Scottburgh Ride : 8 September
This was called off due to the weather. The new date is 3 November and we will call for names towards the end of October.
There were some other rides on Sunday, one in Howick and one in PMB
We tried to get four trips up Howick Road from Show grounds to Athlone Circle. I was not feeling that well this morning so I was taking it slow and ended up slowing the group up a bit so as not getting enough time to get the last one in. Well done to the guys good job
Will be speed work up Hesketh drive medium pace with one sprint, leaving Spar at 4:50.
Saturday ride : 15 September
Meet at Steers at 05:00. Route - up Foxhill/ Dards/Cato Ridge and on to the Comrades Wall and back up Polly’s. Approximately 97kms. At an average pace of 25kph our riding time should be less than 4 hours.
I need people for backup you don’t have to do it yourself you can get someone to do it for you so you can ride. You will be paid R180.
I have the backup kit and as I ride to most of the starts, I need to hand the kit over in the week.
This group is growing and yesterday we had Dale, Justin, Bill, Greg, Natalie and ww. We did a 2 hour ride at a steady pace with Bill pulling us up the hills and Natalie pulling us down the hills!! Many thanks to Greg for leading us.
It was good to see Justin again and he rode very well. It was great to be the 2nd youngest in the group and I must say we must have some of the strongest Ballies in the country!!
We enjoyed Cappa’s and Breakies back at St John’s Village.
Next Monday we leave Jaxx at 09:00.
6 September: D Group met at VV and left at 4:50 for a ride around the airport. The route taken was out of town on Boschoff Street, up Hesketh Drive to the top and then the back way round the airport. We did encounter a lot of foot traffic all dressed in dark clothes and their visibility was difficult to see, which made going downhill at speed very dangerous. We’ve decided to rather do this route the other way round which will make it safer. We proceeded down Alexander road Ext, past Makro and back home through town. We ended the ride with a good cup of Seattle coffee on the way home.
11 September: 11 of us left VV for a normal town route ride in extremely cold, miserable weather – the only complaint I heard was “my hands, ears & toes are frozen!” I decided not to do hills, we’ll leave those for Thursday. There were no incidences on the way and the group behaved themselves. The ride ended at VV where we enjoyed a cup of coffee at the coffee shop there. Carel and I set off back home, with him accompanying me to get some extra mileage – we then parted ways and he returned home.
15 September: D Group will ride from Steers, leaving at 5a.m. We’ll ride to the airfield and, depending on how the group is coping with the ride, we’ll take in the Lion Park loop on the way home, and then Dards, Foxhill and back home. Please remember this is a group ride, we will have a backup vehicle and you need to make sure you have working front and back lights and are wearing club kit.
Ride safe, stay alert, stay alive,
MTB Captains Report – 11th September 2018
Fire Season: this is a windy and dry time of year and Sappi may close certain trails due to a high fire danger index. This closure is not negotiable.
This does not usually affect the Cedara trails. Please use your discretion and err on the safe side when riding in Cedara on windy days. Nobody wants to be caught in a forest fire.
The club has arranged a skills training course. Cost is R250 a session of 2hrs, with max of 10 per session. Course will be provided by Absolute Motion of Hilton. Please contact me if you are interested. Date is set for Saturday 15th September, 2 to 4pm.
WEARING OF CLUB KIT
Please be reminded that we are obliged to wear club kit on all club rides and when representing the club at races. It is understood that occasionally this may not be possible. However the agreement with our sponsor, Compendium, is dependent on us complying with our part of the deal. Thanks for your support in this regard. The kit looks good, is subsidised and really good quality.
A/B Group – A/B group ride this past weekend. This group is for the faster riders. Should anyone be willing to lead, please contact me.
C Group – Mark Rowland leads the C group. The C group is more of an intermediate ability group doing as much single track as they can.
D Group – The D group is intended for those newer to mountain biking or less fit and is typically no more than 25km’s of essentially forest roads, but with some single track included in the mix. The D group is led by various members on a roster format.
