CHAIRMAN’S REPORT: 5-2-2018
We are in the final straights of organising this year’s Compendium Midmar Notts race, which takes place on Sunday 25 January.
The legal side of organising the race has been completed and Gill Bure is in the process of organising marshals for the day. Whilst we are encouraging our road riders to ride, we would also like to see our mountain bikers putting their hand up to marshal on the day, as this will save the club an enormous amount of money.
We have a new, exciting, safer route this year and the marking of the route will be done next week. The final meeting for logistics will take place at Michaelhouse next week and we have also put plans in place to fix the dangerous potholes on the Friday and Saturday mornings, to avoid any unnecessary punctures.
I hope you all noticed the write up in the Natal Witness on Saturday morning, ably written by Larry. Warwick will hold his final race committee meeting to iron out any last minute logistics and then it’s all systems go.
Please diarise the prize giving for 2017 winners, which will take place on 1 March at Maritzburg Golf Club - 6 for 6:30p.m. Guest speaker still to be announced.
The same will apply as last year where the club pays 50% for club members R90 and non-club members pay the full price R190.
I’d also like to take this opportunity to wish Jill Edwardes a speedy recovery after her neck operation last week – we miss you on the road Jill, and look forward to the day that you’re back on your bike.
Saturday 3rd Feb.
Five of us gathered together at the Quarry parking lot in Hilton. 4 road bikes, Martin, Franko, Albie and myself, and one Mountain biker from Jhb, Mark. We all left together, having turns in front, on route through Howick to end Karkloof Rd where we had a snack and then returned back to Jaxx. The Mountain Biker left us roadies, on the way back which was quite embarrassing. Mark is a really strong rider. Weather was really good for riding, with no incidents to report. A good breakfast was enjoyed by all after the ride.
Stats were; 68km, 1050m climbing, 25.5 ave km/hr.
Tues and Thurs rides
Virgin Active, Victoria road at 4:55am, about 32kms
This coming Sat 10th Feb.
Meet at Steers for a 5am start for a ride out to Comrades wall and back.
Maluti Double 90.
We are in the process of putting a 3rd Burg Wheeler team together. We still have some places. If you keen, please talk to Albie or myself urgently.
1. Report from Last Saturday's C Group Ride
In the absence of C Group leader Allan, I led Saturday’s ride. There were 9 of us – Bill, Jan, Nathalie, Peter G, Sya and me from the Amber Ridge Riders and locals Alec, Justin and Zaheer. We were joined partway by Ray of Jowett’s.
We did the ride chosen by Allan - Ashburton Training Centre via NPA Hill, Camperdown, Cato Ridge, the Hammarsdale Loop, Drummond, Inchanga and back the same way to the ATC. The challenge of the 82 km and 1300m of climbing at just under 22 km/hr was well met by all. I punctured in Hammarsdale and was grateful for Geoff being on hand to quickly replace the rear wheel. Thanks so much to Geoff for being there for us. Coffee and breakfast was enjoyed by most at the ATC Clubhouse.
2. Entries for the Cape Town Cycle Tour
Sya and I will not being going down for the Cape Town Cycle Tour (Cape Argus) and would like to pass our entries onto anyone looking for a last minute entry. I can be contacted on 071 673 1217.
1 February – Morning ride didn’t take place due to heavy rain.
3 February Saturday morning ride: Set off from Greendale Spar with Cobus doing backup for the following riders: Mohammed, Sean, Trishan, Llew, Sandi, Janice, Helga, Arthur, Dee, Enver and myself and we were joined by Eddie and Moira on the way.
The route took us past Midmar Dam through Howick, onto the Karkloof Road to the end and back, leaving a little surprise for the end when I took them up the hill past Amberfield to the Curry’s Post road and back down to Greendale Spar, a total of 57kms and 861m of climbing according to strava, average speed of 21kph. It was a great ride in cool weather with good discipline, which became a bit tatty towards the end with the group breaking up, but then regrouping before the big hill. We all enjoyed a great cup of coffee and the best and cheapest breakfast in town.
6 February -
13 of us left VV at 4:50am - up Victoria road, right into Mayors Walk, left up Morcom road and down Stott road, left into Mayors Walk to the turning point, back into town. We then turned left up Roberts road, right into Centenary road, right into Kitchener road and back to Victoria rd, up to Cascades and back to VV down Town Bush rd, 23km with 419 m climbing. Pleasant ride, thanks to all.
Meet at Steers 05:00am for a ride up Fox Hill to Camperdown back over the loop home along Dards down Fox Hill and back to Steers.
We will need a backup driver for Saturday
